Halkin, Simon

Halkin, Simon
(1898-1987)
   American Hebrew poet, novelist and educator, brother of Abraham Halkin. He was born in Russia and emigrated to the US in 1914. He taught at the Hebrew Union College School for Teachers in New York from 1925 to 1932, when he settled in Palestine. He returned to the US in 1939 and became professor of Hebrew literature at the Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. In 1949 he was appointed professor of modern Hebrew literature at the Hebrew University. He wrote novels and works of literary criticism, and made translations.
